Chinese Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine has been practiced in almost all human cultures throughout history. Chinese herbalism is an unbroken written tradition stretching back more than 2000 years - countless original texts of empirical observation and application have been preserved, passing down the accumulated knowledge of many generations of herbalist masters. Modern herbalists typically utilize a collection of over 365 different plants, animal products, and minerals in thousands of different combinations to create formulas specifically customized to the constitution of each patient to alleviate symptoms and increase overall health. At YesYes we use only ethically and sustainably harvested herbs in our formulas, and we never utilize products from plants or animals that are endangered or threatened.

Things to know about Chinese herbal medicine

  • Herbal formulas are almost always composed of many different herbs, containing anywhere between four and fifteen different compounds. This allows for one formula to effect many systems in the body at the same time.

  • The dosages of herbs are very high, often much higher than those amounts found in store bought supplements. When taking Chinese herbs it is always important to pay attention to any side effects that you may be experiencing after starting a new formula and to keep your herbalist appraised of these changes.

  • Herbal formulas are most commonly ingested as granules, a powdered form of herb that is easily dissolvable in warm water. Capsules or tablets of some formulas may be available. If the patient wishes, herbal formulas may also be prescribed in their raw forms; the patient may then prepare their formula in the traditional way - usually by boiling these herbs in a large quantity of water for an extended period of time.

  • Consistency is key. When using herbs it is important to take your formula as often as is instructed by your herbalist - usually three times per day.

  • In many cases it will be necessary to take an herbal formula from anywhere between 6 weeks an 6 months or longer. Typically, the longer that a patient has had a certain set of symptoms, the longer that they will need to take herbs for the best positive effect. Patients should keep this in mind when deciding if herbal medicine is right for them.

Scheduling an appointment and paying for herbs

You may discuss herbal medicine with your acupuncturist/herbalist during a regular acupuncture session. Please note that depending on the complexity of the case your acupuncturist may determine that additional time will be required to customize a formula best suited for your constitution.

You may also schedule a separate appointment for Chinese herbs only (without acupuncture) by selecting "Herbal consultation" in our online scheduler.

Unfortunately, medical health insurance does not directly pay for services related to herbal medicine or for the herbs themselves. However, you CAN use a Health Savings Account to pay for both the herbs and consultation.

Please be aware that the prices outlined below do NOT include the costs of herbs.

  • Herbal consultation only - $100 (includes two 15 minute phone follow-ups at 7 days and 14 days)
